Australia continued its dominance in the Trans-Tasman T20 Tri Series as it won the match against England by 5 wickets after defeating the Kiwis in the opening game by 7 wickets. The hosts have 4 points in their bag and will take on England in the 3rd match at Melbourne on 10th February. The two teams have had a bitter rivalry in all formats of the game, and with a win in hand already, Australia has an upper hand. England is in the 2nd place but will need to garner points with a win here; it needs to be seen if they can outwit the Aussies in their own backyard.
The bowlers put up a fierce fight stifling the English batting line-up to 155 runs in the last match; spinners Ashton Agar and Maxwell took 5 wickets between them to disarray the middle-order while pacers Andrew Tye, Stanlake, Richardson and Stoinis took a wicket each. Later, the batsmen led by Maxwell’s powerful and sensible 103 off 58 took the team to a big win by 5 wickets after successfully chasing down 156. D’Arcy Short pitched in with 30 runs but others failed to make an impression.
Against the Kiwis, it was Stanlake and Tye who restricted the opponents to 117 runs as they took 3-15 and 4-23 respectively. Spinners Agar and Zampa claimed a wicket each and add depth to the attack along with others like Stoinis and all-rounder Maxwell. With the rain affected game’s second innings reduced to 15 overs, the hosts had to reach 95 runs which they did with ease thanks to Lynn and Maxwell’s well-made 40+ runs each.
Australia has a good mix of pace and spin attack, which they could leverage to dominate the visitors; in-form batsmen like Maxwell, Lynn, Warner and Short could ensure they put up a strong total while batting first or chase one comfortably.
Dawid Malan top-scored with the bat as he made 50 runs off 36 deliveries against Australia; Alex Hales and captain Eoin Morgan also pitched in with 20+ runs each but they could muster only 155 in the end. Players like Jason Roy, Buttler, Sam Billings and David Willey failed to build strong innings and they could try to put up a better performance here on Saturday.
Willey did well with his pace skills, claiming 3-28 but they couldn’t stop the Aussies from reaching the target. Speedster Mark Wood and spinner Adil Rashid also dismissed one opponent each but others like Jordan and Curran failed to make a dent on the opposition.
They have good resources with bat and ball and could put up a strong fight here to avenge their defeat. With an in-form middle order, England could try to post a challenging total if batting first or during chase.
