England would look to avenge the T20I series loss and go hard at India in the ODI series. We takes a look at the strengths, weaknesses of two teams, match prediction of the first ODI between England and India at Nottingham on Thursday.
England are coming off a 5-0 ODI series win against Australia and they are the best No 1 ODI team in the world currently. England have the batting superpower and bowling prowess to beat India. They have the in-form batsmen in Jonny Bairstow, Jos Buttler, Alex Hales, Jason Roy. They also have been boosted by the return of Ben Stokes in their squad. In terms of bowling, they have Liam Plunkett, Moeen Ali, Adil Rashid Khan who had a good ODI series against Australia. India will have a challenge at hand to tackle the No 1 ODI team in the world.
England do not face quality spin often. And they have been found wanting against the spin duo of YS Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav. They do have Moeen Ali, Adil Rashid in their ranks. But in comparison to Chahal-Kuldeep, the England spin duo falls short. Besides, India have Axar Patel in their ranks. It will be a tough ask for England to thwart the Indian spin challenge.
India have been a powerhouse of batting talent. They have Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul who have struck a ton each in the T20I series. They also have reliable batsman in skipper Virat Kohli who is yet to hit top gear. Shikhar Dhawan is yet to fire in the tour and can be expected to do the damage in the ODI series. They have Suresh Raina, MS Dhoni, Hardik Pandya in the line-up who can expected to finish off the game for India. In the reserve, they have Manish Pandey, Shreyas Iyer and Dinesh Karthik who are waiting for opportunities to help India win matches.
India have a pace attack that is missing their main weapon Jasprit Bumrah due to injury. The likes of Umesh Yadav, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Shardul Thakur, Siddarth Kaul although promising can be taken for runs by the talented England batting line-up. Indian pace-attack can be their weakness if Bhuvi and Umesh get injured or have an off-day. It will too much off a pressure on the young Thakur and Kaul. India need their experienced pacers Bhuvi, Umesh to be on top of their game.
