Adelaide Strikers won the match against Hobart Hurricanes recently by 11 runs and they are now in the 2nd place with 12 points; the Strikers will take on Melbourne Renegades, who are placed 4th with 8 points, at Melbourne on 22nd January. The Renegades lost the match against Melbourne Stars recently by 23 runs, and they will be eager to move up the ladder with a better performance here on Monday. This is the first time the two teams are meeting each other this season and it surely could be an interesting clash as the competition gets heated in the run-up to the knock-out stage.
Chasing 168 against Melbourne Stars, captain Dwayne Bravo tried to lead the charge with 26 runs while Mohammad Nabi and Jack Wildermuth scored 23 runs each; however, with no steady partnerships, they lost the match by 23 runs. Earlier, Nabi took 2 wickets with his spin tactics to restrict Stars to 167 while Wildermuth and Kane Richardson took a wicket each. But others like Jon Holland and Brad Hogg proved to be too expensive; they have a good mix of pace and spin, and can put up a better performance here.
Batting first against Perth Scorchers, the batsmen did well to post 185; Cameron White top-scored with 68 off 55 while Tom Cooper posted a well-made 57. Marcus Harris scored 48 off 28 to build a good foundation; however, the bowlers couldn’t stop the Scorchers from hitting the winning runs despite a wicket each by Nabi, Richardson and Hogg.
The Renegades are fighting to make it to the next stage and will leave no stone unturned to keep their hopes alive with an all-round performance in the upcoming match.
Renegades’ spinners could be very effective on friendly Melbourne’s surface
A possible top-four slot could be a huge motivation factor for the Renegades
All-rounders like Dwayne Bravo, and Mohammad Nabi can be pretty handy with both bat and ball.
Batting first against Hobart Hurricanes, the batsmen did a commendable job to post 187; wicket-keeper and opening batsman Alex Carey top-scored with 100 off 56 while Jake Weatherald contributed with 65 before getting run-out. Later, the pacers Michael Neser, Peter Siddle and Ben Laughlin took a wicket each to defend the total and help win the match by 11 runs.
However, against Scorchers the batsmen put up a dismal show as they could muster only 112 runs; Alex Carey scored 44 runs but others down the line were dismissed cheaply on single digits. Weatherald and Jonathan Dean tried to keep the scoreboard ticking but they couldn’t build good partnerships. Michael Neser and Peter Siddle took 3 wickets between them while spinner Rashid Khan took a wicket each, but they fought an unwinnable battle in defending the humble total.
The Strikers have done well throughout the series, winning 6 out of 8 matches and making it to the top half of the table; they could prove to be a formidable force to reckon with on Monday.
